Guangzhou
The home of Cantonese food — dim sum in century-old tea houses, the carved Chen Clan Hall and the Xiguan lanes, Shamian's colonial boulevards, the Canton Tower over the Pearl River, and Foshan's kung fu temple an hour away by metro.
A sample 2-day Guangzhou route
Day 1 is old Guangzhou — Xiguan, Shamian and the night river — and needs only the Chen Clan Hall online ticket, so it suits an arrival day and works on Mondays. Day 2 links the old city on Yuexiu Hill with the new town: the Nanyue King's tomb, the Guangdong Museum (book 7 days ahead at 22:00; closed Mondays) and the Canton Tower after dark.

When to go to Guangzhou
Weather, daylight and event dates vary year to year. Treat this as general guidance and check the forecast, typhoon warnings and the Canton Fair calendar close to your dates.
Winter Dec, Jan, Feb
Mild and dry: average highs of about 19–21°C and lows of 11–12°C, with occasional cold snaps near 5°C. Most homes and older buildings have no heating, so indoors can feel chilly.
Bring a warm layer for evenings and the river cruise; around Lunar New Year, check that family-run restaurants are open.
Look out for: Lunar New Year flower fairs, Clear, dry days for Baiyun Mountain and the Canton Tower
Spring Mar, Apr
Warm and very humid, about 15–26°C, with fog and the damp 'return-south' weather (回南天) that leaves floors and walls wet.
Keep a museum or mall in reserve for wet days, and expect hazy views from the Canton Tower.
Look out for: Kapok (red cotton tree) blossom, the city flower, in March, Spring Canton Fair from mid-April
Summer May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep
Hot and humid: highs of 30–33°C and lows of 23–26°C, feeling hotter in the humidity.
Do Xiguan and Shamian early, spend midday in museums and malls, and save the tower and cruise for evenings. If a typhoon or black rainstorm warning is issued, cruises and outdoor sights close — stay indoors.
Look out for: Dragon boat races, Lychee season (May–July), Guangdong Museum open late in July–August
Autumn Oct, Nov
The best season: dry and sunny, about 21–29°C in October and 17–25°C in November.
Avoid Golden Week and the Canton Fair weeks if you can; if not, book hotels and the Guangdong Museum early.
Look out for: Clear evenings for the Canton Tower and the Pearl River cruise, Canton Fair (autumn session)

Where to stay in Guangzhou
Stay within a few minutes' walk of a metro station on Lines 1, 2, 3, 5 or 6 — Guangzhou is spread out, and the old town (Liwan and Yuexiu) and the new town (Zhujiang New Town) are 20–30 minutes apart by metro. Every hotel registers foreign guests with the police at check-in, so have your passport ready; a few small budget hotels still aren't licensed to take foreigners, so book listings that say they accept foreign passports. Prices are estimates and jump during the Canton Fair (autumn 2026: 15–19 Oct, 23–27 Oct and 31 Oct–4 Nov; spring session from mid-April to early May), Golden Week (1–7 Oct) and Lunar New Year — hotels near Pazhou and Zhujiang New Town can double or triple.

- Comfortable — S$250–670+ · 5-star hotels with river or skyline views, The heritage White Swan Hotel on Shamian
- Check whether your dates overlap the Canton Fair before you book, and book early if they do — or stay in Liwan or Yuexiu, away from Pazhou.
- Check that the listing accepts foreign (non-mainland) guests and that the name on the booking matches your passport.
- Ask the hotel to write its name and address in Chinese, and save it on your phone for DiDi and taxis.
Prices and availability change constantly, especially in Canton Fair weeks. Confirm current rates, and that the hotel accepts foreign passports, on the hotel or a booking site before paying.
Common Guangzhou mistakes to avoid
- Turning up at Chen Clan Ancestral Hall on a Tuesday, or without a ticket. It closes on Tuesdays (except public holidays) and sells tickets only online — book on the 广东民间工艺博物馆服务号 WeChat account or Trip.com with your passport.
- Leaving the Guangdong Museum to the day. It's free but every visitor needs a real-name timed booking (slots for the next 7 days release daily at 22:00), and it's closed on Mondays.
- Planning museums for a Monday. The Guangdong Museum, the Nanyue King Museum, Zhenhai Tower, the Cantonese Opera Art Museum, the Bruce Lee Ancestral Home and Sacred Heart Cathedral's interior are all closed on Mondays.
- Expecting to wander into Sacred Heart Cathedral any time. The interior opens to visitors only in short windows (Tue–Fri 09:00–11:00 and 15:00–17:00, Sat 09:00–14:30, Sun 13:00–14:30).
- Booking a Guangzhou hotel for Canton Fair dates without checking. During the fair (15 Oct–4 Nov 2026 in three phases; again from mid-April) rates around Pazhou and Zhujiang New Town can double or triple.
- Going to the wrong airport terminal or station. Terminal 1 is closed; international flights use T2 or T3. Guangzhou, Guangzhou South, Guangzhou East, Guangzhou North and Guangzhou Baiyun are different stations.
- Forgetting your passport for the Pearl River cruise or the Canton Tower — both are real-name, and so are trains and the intercity line to Terminal 3.
- Arriving without Alipay or WeChat Pay set up and tested. Link your card, verify your passport, make a test payment in Singapore and warn your bank — first foreign transactions are often blocked as fraud.
- Letting your Singapore SIM lapse or switching it off. Alipay, WeChat, DiDi and your bank send one-time passwords to your +65 number. Use dual SIM: eSIM for data, Singapore SIM for SMS.
- Relying on hotel Wi-Fi or a local SIM for Google, Instagram, WhatsApp or YouTube uploads. These are filtered; use roaming or a travel eSIM with HK/SG breakout. Don't count on a VPN.
- Assuming Changi Pay still works in China. Its overseas QR payments ended on 1 Oct 2026. Use a card linked to Alipay or WeChat, DBS Remit to a Weixin Pay wallet, or OCBC Scan & Pay.
- Pasting Google Maps coordinates into Amap or Baidu without converting them. China's maps use an offset datum, so the pin lands 100–700 m off. Search by the Chinese name instead (every stop in this guide has one).
- Queuing at 12:30 on a Sunday for dim sum at Tao Tao Ju or Hongtu Hall. Go at opening or after 13:30 on a weekday, or take a queue number and walk Shangxiajiu while you wait.
- Booking with a name or passport number that doesn't exactly match the passport you carry — museum, tower, cruise and train tickets are all real-name.
- Arriving at Guangzhou South 15 minutes before a high-speed train. Security and passport checks are slow, gates close 2–7 minutes before departure, and it is one of China's busiest stations — allow 60–90 minutes.
- Paying large bills through Alipay or WeChat with a foreign card (3% fee above ¥200) when the hotel or restaurant takes the card directly.
- Carrying only ¥100 notes. Change can be short, and counterfeit ¥100 notes circulate.
- Accepting invitations to tea, a bar, a massage or an 'art student' gallery from friendly strangers in tourist areas — the bill can run to thousands of yuan.
- Staying in an Airbnb or private home without registering with the local police within 24 hours (hotels do it for you at check-in).
- Miscounting the 30 visa-free days. Days run from the day after arrival; keep a buffer, and repeat visitors (including Hong Kong side trips and re-entries) should watch the 90-days-in-180 cap.
- Bringing a power bank without a clear 3C (CCC) mark, or from a recalled batch, onto a domestic Chinese flight, or using one to charge devices in flight; and flying a drone without CAAC real-name registration and activation (required for new drones since 1 May 2026).
