A sample 3-day Chengdu route

The core trip. A light arrival day of teahouse, alleys and the opera; the Panda Base at opening with Taikoo Li and a river cruise; then Du Fu Thatched Cottage, the Shu brocade looms and Wuhou Shrine on the last day. Every core stop opens seven days a week, so no Monday closure lands on the route. No timed booking on arrival day.

If it rains: The teahouse has covered seating and Wenshu's halls give shelter; in heavy rain swap Kuanzhai for the Chengdu Museum on Tianfu Square (free, book ahead, closed Mondays except public holidays — on a Monday use the Shu Brocade and Embroidery Museum by Du Fu Cottage, open daily, about 15 minutes by taxi).
Add if you have time: Before dinner, walk round Qingyang Palace (¥10, closes about 17:00) and the Culture Park teahouses beside the opera house.

This is one of several routes in the guide — change the length, budget and dates yourself in the workspace.

When to go to Chengdu

Weather, daylight, air quality and festival dates vary year to year. Treat this as general guidance and check a forecast, the AQI (aqicn.org or the Ministry of Ecology and Environment) and official holiday calendars close to your dates.

Winter Dec, Jan, Feb

Cool, damp and grey, roughly 3–12°C; frost and snow are rare in the city, but older buildings and teahouses have little heating so it feels colder indoors.

Lean on museums, covered teahouses and hot pot; the Panda Base opens at 08:00 (Nov–Feb). Air quality is usually at its worst in winter — check the AQI and pack KN95 masks if you are sensitive.

Look out for: Hot pot season, Wuhou Shrine's Spring Festival temple fair (成都大庙会), Pandas are lively on cold mornings

Spring Mar, Apr, May

Mild and pleasant, roughly 12–26°C.

Book holiday-week tickets on release day; mornings are best for the pandas and for Mount Qingcheng.

Look out for: Spring flowers in the city parks, Dujiangyan Water-Releasing Festival (early April), The Panda Base opens at 07:30 from March

Summer Jun, Jul, Aug

Hot and humid, often 25–33°C.

Be at the Panda Base at 07:30, spend midday in museums or a teahouse, and go out again after dark. Keep a wet-weather swap for Leshan and Qingcheng.

Look out for: Extended museum hours, Night markets and riverside evenings, Cooler air at Mount Qingcheng

Autumn Sep, Oct, Nov

Comfortable, roughly 14–26°C, cooling through November.

Avoid 1–7 October if you can; late October and November are the sweet spot. Bring a layer for cool mornings at the Panda Base.

Look out for: Golden ginkgo leaves (the city tree) from late November to early December, Autumn colour on Mount Qingcheng, The Panda Base switches to 08:00 opening from 1 November

Stay within a few minutes' walk of a Line 1, 2 or 3 station in the centre — Chunxi Road/Taikoo Li, Tianfu Square or the Kuanzhai/People's Park side — and every city sight in this guide is one or two metro rides away. Line 1 from Tianfu Square runs straight to South Railway Station for Line 18 to Tianfu airport. Hotel prices are good value by Singapore standards but jump during Golden Week (1–7 Oct), Chinese New Year and July–August.

How long to go

3–4 days suits most visitors. Shorter and longer routes are built in, so you are never padding a trip to fill days.

Entry reminder: Singapore ordinary passport holders don't need a visa: the China–Singapore mutual visa exemption (in force since 9 Feb 2024) allows up to 30 days per entry for tourism, family visits, business meetings and other private purposes — work, journalism and paid or commissioned shoots still need a visa. The 30 days count from 00:00 on the day after you arrive (arrive 1 Nov, leave by 23:59 on 1 Dec); keep a day in hand, and if you visit China often treat 90 days in any 180 as a working cap. Your passport must be valid for the whole stay (6 months is the safe norm because airlines may check). Fill in the online Arrival Card before you fly (NIA website, the NIA 12367 app, or the WeChat/Alipay mini-program) or use the QR codes, kiosks or paper card on arrival. Hotels register you with the police at check-in; in an Airbnb or private home you or your host must register at the local police station within 24 hours. Declare cash over RMB 20,000 or foreign currency over US$5,000. Rules can change — confirm on the ICA and MFA (mfa.gov.sg) websites before you travel. This is a general reminder only — confirm your specific requirements on the relevant government website before booking. Last checked 2026-10-03.
